On Homeschooling: Learning Deep or Wide

I've been giving this a lot of thought lately.  Do you  teach your children a wide breadth of information in hopes of exposing them to as much as possible?  Or, do you delve deeply into those ideas that they are most passionate so they might know a wealth of knowledge on a few beloved subjects, while still, of course, obtaining the fundamentals in those areas in which they are not so passionate.

I heard a podcast recently that really swayed me to the latter, and I'd love to hear your thoughts one way or the other.

Here are a few key points in support of "learning deep":

  1. We can not possibly -nor should we try to- teach our children everything there is to know.
  2. Kids, like everyone else, will learn that which they find most relevant in their lives.
  3. So, if it's not relevant to them, even if we teach them, how effective is their retention?
  4. Since we have the opportunity to help our kids follow their dreams, shouldn't we use this opportunity of homeschooling to focus in on those areas that will serve them best today and in the future?
  5. If I ultimately want to teach my child to love to learn and to know how to find the information he or she needs to know, then am I self-defeating if I pour over, say,  ancient history when he or she is obviously hating every bit of it...thereby vilifying learning as a love of life?
  6. But, if I present to, say, the child that loves all things science-related, every opportunity to indulge in so many different areas of science -labs, mentors, books, videos, museums, scientists, etc- am I not then passively allowing them to find for themselves the true joy of knowledge?
  7. Thus, if the above is true, won't their intrinsic joy of knowledge lead them to those areas into which they might not intrinsically love once they find they NEED to understand an unknown?

I don't know.  It has just been a new way of thinking for me...shove all the information in the world at them because I love knowledge has been my prior methodology...well, I'm not that bad, but I kinda feel like I've been like that.

Homeschooling is a joy and we have YEARS to joyfully learn, far beyond any graduation date. It doesn't -and now I'm thinking it shouldn't- have to be so wide a spread of information thrown at them right now....isn't that what public school does anyway?  And, what do I remember from that?  What do you remember?  Yeah, not much if you are like me....:)

Deep or Wide?  What are your thoughts?
