From Homeschooling to Public School-Month 1

It's been one month since my kiddos have stepped into the Public School world.  After six years of homeschooling I was curious, and a little nervous, as to how they would fare.

Perhaps it's best if I share what my 6th grade son and 9th grade daughter have shared about this first month thus far.

The Kids' Take on Their First Month

  1. Getting up early isn't the end of the world.
  2. "Riding the bus is fun!" (son)
  3. There are some cool classes.  It just depends on the teacher.
  4. There are all sorts of different people.
  5. -and most all of them are really nice!
  6. "High School is pretty cool.  And easy."
  7. Football games have new meaning.
  8. Sometimes making friends is hard.
  9. Until it becomes easy.
  10. There are a lot of tests.
  11. "School lunches are great!" (son)
  12. "School lunches are terrible."(daughter)
  13. When you accidentally skip a problem on a test, you don't get to go back and do it.  It's just marked wrong (big surprise for both the kids).
  14. You really have to read the directions and write down homework.
  15. Homework is no fun.
  16. "There's never time to do what I want to do."
  17. "I'm a lot busier.  That's good AND bad."
  18. "But, I pretty much love it so far."
  19. "First Days and New Things can be scary, but now I don't know why."

High School Jitters -but not for long!

My Take on Public School-Month 1

  1. Public school can be the perfect option sometimes.
  2. Homeschooling can be the perfect option sometimes.
  3. The teacher makes all the difference in the world.
  4. In some subjects they are far ahead, and it all comes easily.
  5. Subjects that were not a favorite before are still not a favorite.
  6. Exception: a great teacher makes any subject exciting.
  7. Bullies do exist.
  8. Schools are quick to address and remedy bullies.
  9. School lunches can really add up.
  10. Driving the kids to school can really add up, too!
  11. The bus comes way too early.
  12. Teachers care.
  13. Core Curriculum sucks.
  14. A schedule I didn't create is great.
  15. It's nice to be "just" Mom again.
  16. The kids aren't as polite as they were just a month ago.
  17. Their eyes are opened to how blessed they are and just how much need is out there.

Just off the bus look: school can't take the fun out of this kid!
Nor will I ever get a serious photo of him.
Oh! Almost! He was too quick!

So, all in all, not bad!  In fact, pretty good.  We'll keep you updated. Have you recently gone from homeschooling to public schooling? If so, I'd love to hear from you!
