DIY: Christmas Ideas- Paints and Stencils on Glass

I've been trying to make Christmas decorations and decor without breaking the bank.  Well, I found one I think you'll like: inexpensive, easy, and pretty, too!  See, you love it already don't you??

Please!  Disregard how many water marks are on the glass!  :)

Painting on Glass

So, I used the Martha Stewart Glass Paint you see here..in pearl.  I couldn't find the stencil brush set I bought for the very reason! but it didn't seem to matter.

Steps to Perfect Painted Glassware

  1. Make sure your stencil is really stuck on there-little bubbles seem to creep up sometimes!
  2. I'd suggest paint specifically for glass- they are dishwasher safe when cured (wait 21 days or stick them in the oven for a bit)
  3. Expect at least two coats.  Make the first one light
  4. Peel off your stencil before the paint dries making sure it doesn't fling itself and re-stick ON what you just stenciled...not that happened to me or anything :)

There are so many colors to choose!  Imaging the possibilities-on white ware, mugs, jars.  I'd like to take an old window frame, paint the frames, or just some of them, and hang it where the light can shine through the colors.

Oh, the colors in the MS light range from translucent to pearl to metallic to opaque...and some others still.

What I Used to Make the Stencils:

  • vinyl -you can find this cheaply online-much less than cricut's own brand found in stores
  • cricut cutting machine

Here's what it looks like mid-process-not pretty, but it does the job :)  The white is the vinyl-it has a smooth side and a sticky side.

Hope you find some great glassware to paint!  Let me know when you do!
